| Aha ! Wetenstappen |
| Aha! The Footsteps of Science in Leuven
(Aha! WetenStappen) is a free scientific walking route through the
university city of Leuven. All the faculties of the K.U.Leuven (Catholic
University of Leuven) display a panel with questions and answers allowing
you to discover more about a main theme. As the United Nations celebrate
the International Year of Planet Earth, the theme for 2008 is “planet
Earth”… How do philosophers approach this concept? What
have mathematicians got to say about it? You will find out along the
way.
Each panel includes a summary in English, French, German and Spanish.

| Earth and Space week |
|
Astronauts and scientists give their views on topical issues concerning
the planet earth and space. They go to several locations with the aim of
raising awareness among the Belgian youth. The activities are also open
to anyone who is interested. Earth and Space Week is organised by the non-profit
organisation Euro Space Society, in association with several partners. |

Geology in the International Year of Planet Earth |
The European Federation of Geologists (EFG
) in collaboration with International Year of
Planet Earth and EuroGeoSurveys - the Association of the Geological Surveys
of Europe are
pleased to invite you to a debate during the Green week.
Natural resources and natural hazards of geological origin play a critical
role for the future of
Europe and the world. The issue is increasingly recognised by EU as well
as national policies
and legislation. Geological knowledge, which simply is understanding the
nature, structure,
dynamics and history of the Earth’s subsurface, as well as geological
information are the basis
for the provision of energy, minerals, groundwater, landscapes, soils, subsurface
space and
mitigation of impacts of a wide range of natural hazards. Therefore, understanding
and
managing Europe’s third dimension, is a vital component of our sustainable
future.

| Symposium
on Perspectives of Carbon Capture and Storage in Belgium |
| Carbon Capture and geological Storage (CCS)
groups a number of technologies that may play an important role in reducing
the CO2 emission from industrial sources during the next decades. Recent
initiatives, such as the preparation of the EU directive on CCS, have
brought the discussion from the international level to Belgium and its
regions. During the past two and a half years, the BELSPO funded project
Policy Support System for Carbon Capture and Storage, has tried to provide
detailed insights. This encompasses an evaluation of current and future
major sources of CO2, pipeline transport for large amounts of CO2, and
the national and international geological storage options. All this data
is brought together in the PSS simulator, which allows to assess in detail
the impact of CCS in Belgium. The symposium ‘Perspectives of Carbon
Capture and Storage in Belgium’ will present the final results
of this five partner project. We also hope to show what CCS means for
different stakeholders. |

en sciences naturelles : Baie de Somme et Boulonnais |
| Une semaine de découverte naturaliste
et géologique dans le territoire des parcs naturels des Caps de
la Côte d’Opale, de la Côte Picarde et de la Baie de
Somme. Traversée à pied de la Baie, observation des oiseaux
au Marquenterre et d’une colonie de phoques, excursions le long
de superbes falaises rocheuses et récolte d’une grande variété de
fossiles (ammonites, bélemnites, oursins) et de minéraux.
Visite du musée du Sable et de la Dune, d’un herbarium,
des hortillonnages, des jardins de Valloires, du chasse-marée
au Crotoy et d’autres attractions... A partir de 10 ans (les moins
de 14 ans doivent être accompagnés). Organisé par
l’Institut royal des Sciences naturelles de Belgique.

Nationales de la Spéléologie |
| Pour la première fois l'Union Belge
de Spéléologie et le Vlaams Verbond van Speleologen organisent
les 4 & 5 octobre 2008, les JOURNÉES NATIONALES DE LA SPÉLÉOLOGIE.
Partout en Belgique, les Clubs de Spéléologie se mobiliseront
pour lever un coin du voile sur leur passion pour le moins obscure : la
découverte
du monde souterrain. Des sorties d'initiation dans des cavités,
aménagées
ou non, permettront, à celles et ceux qui le souhaitent, de partager
avec des spéléologues qualifiés les joies de la découverte
du monde souterrain.La participation aux activités de cette manifestation
est entièrement gratuite et couverte par une assurance spécifique.Des
conférences publiques montreront que la Spéléologie
n'est pas simplement un sport mais que c'est aussi une activité culturelle
et scientifique aux multiples facettes. Les spéléologues
exposeront leurs dernières découvertes faites de photos et
de relevés
des cheminements souterrains.Les informations détaillées
sur le déroulement de la manifestation sont disponibles auprès
de l'Union Belge du Spéléologie et des Clubs de Spéléologie
et sur son site Internet.
Tijdens het we van 4 en 5 oktober slaan Het Verbond
van Vlaamse Speleologen en de Union Belge de Spéléologie
de handen in elkaar voor de organisatie van de NATIONALE DAGEN VAN
DE SPELEOLOGIE.
Overal in België heffen lokale speleologie clubs de sluier van hun obscure
passie : de ondergrond….Verkenningstochten georganiseerd in enkele al
of niet toeristisch uitgeruste grotten maken het voor de meest nieuwsgierigen
mogelijk de ondergrond te ontdekken.Deelname aan deze activiteiten is volledig
gratis en wordt gedekt door een specifieke verzekering. Dat Speleologie niet
enkel een sport maar ook een veelzijdige culturele en wetenschappelijke aangelegenheid
is, wordt aangetoond in publieke conferenties. Speleologen geven hun laatste
ontdekkingen vrij doorheen fotografische opnamen alsook plannen van hun ondergrondse
tochten. Meer informatie over deze dagen zijn te verkrijgen bij het Verbond van
Vlaamse Speleologen, de lokale speleologie clubs en de VVS website.

| Kristallijne
Gesteenten en Platentektoniek (MINPET refresher-upgrade) |
Cursus i.h.k.v. het Internationaal Jaar van
de Planeet Aarde
De cursus behandelt het ontstaan en de vorming van de magmatische gesteenten
in het raam van de processen die zich afspelen in de diepere aarde en die
gekoppeld zijn aan de dynamiek van onze planeet en meer bepaald de platentektoniek.
De cursus is een initiatief van de onderzoeksgroep MIN(eralogie)PET(rologie)
van de Vakgroep Geologie en Bodemkunde (Fac. Wetenschappen, UGent). De lesgevers
zijn prof. dr. Marlina Elburg en prof. dr. Peter Van den haute, die beiden
het petrologie/geochemie onderwijs voor de geologiestudenten aan de UGent
verzorgen.
Module 1: Refresher
Doelpubliek : Leerkrachten aardrijkskunde die hun kennis willen opfrissen
en meer algemeen ieder die vanuit zijn of haar beroep of doorgedreven persoonlijke
interesse meer informatie wil op universitair niveau over de basis van de
magmatische petrologie.
Inhoud : In deze module worden vragen beantwoord zoals: Hoe zit de hedendaagse
classificatie van de magmatische gesteenten in elkaar? Wat is een daciet
of een TAS-diagram? Hoe ontstaat een porfirische textuur? Wat wordt bedoeld
met magmatische differentiatie en gefractioneerde kristallisatie.
Module 2: Upgrade
Doelpubliek: Idem Module 1 + meer specifiek mensen met een diploma hoger
onderwijs in de aardwetenschappen dat dateert van 15 of meer jaar terug die
zich niet meer actief met kristallijne gesteenten hebben ingelaten.
Inhoud: Deze module brengt u op de hoogte van de evolutie die de magmatische
petrologie recent heeft doorgemaakt.
Module 3: Refresher Lab
Doelpubliek & inhoud: In het refresher-lab worden de vaardigheden m.b.t.
gesteenteherkenning (ook niet magmatische gesteenten) in het handstuk geoefend.
Er wordt besproeken hoed de verschillende gesteentesoorten: samenstelling,
kenmerken en veldclassificatie Beschrijven en identificeren van handstukken

de Spéléologie Scientifique |
| Les Journées de Spéléologie
Scientifique sont une organisation conjointe du Centre Belge d'Études
Karstologiques (C.B.E.K., groupe de contact du Fond National de le Recherche
Scientifique- FNRS) et la Commission Scientifique de l'Union Belge de
Spéléologie (UBS). Elles se veulent être le moment
de rencontre privilégié pour tous ceux qui s'intéressent
au monde souterrain. Elles sont l'occasion, pour les spéléologues,
les scientifiques ou simples curieux, de s'informer ou de présenter
de nouvelles découvertes ou observations. Elles sont accessibles à tous
et sont consacrées aux karsts belges et des régions limitrophes
ainsi qu’aux réalisations belges à l’étranger.
La journée de samedi est consacrée aux communications
et à la conférence:
Les Karsts de l’Ardèche – France par Jean-Jacques
Delannoy, Dir. du Laboratoire EDYTEM de l’Université de
Savoie, France.
La journée de dimanche est consacrée à l’excursion
: le karst de la craie de la Montagne Saint-Pierre à Visé par
Luc Willems (Université de Liège) et les membres du Club
de Recherche Souterraine Ourthe-Amblève.

| Stenenpad,
een reis doorheen de tijd |
| Het Stenenpad, een wandelroute langsheen rotsblokken,
beeldt meer dan 500 miljoen jaar aardgeschiedenis uit. De stenen zijn
afkomstig uit verschillende Belgische steengroeven. Sommigen werden uit
de Eifel aangevoerd,enkele mooie exemplaren zijn van Limburgse origine.
Ze getuigen van verschillende geologische tijdperken uit de complexe
ontstaansgeschiedenis van de Belgische en Limburgse ondergrond. De officiële
inhuldiging van het nieuwe Stenenpad is voorzien op 23 november 2008.
In de lente van 2009 zullen hier ook diverse activiteiten voor het grote
publiek plaats vinden. |

Aarde in onze handen |
| De afdeling geologie van de K.U. Leuven wilt
alle belangstellenden de gelegenheid geven om rond een aantal actuele
thema’s, zoals klimaat, milieu, biodiversiteit, exploitatie van
natuurlijke rijkdommen, bevolkingsgroei, in dialoog te treden met wetenschappers
uit diverse disciplines. Vanuit de expertise, aanwezig aan de K.U.Leuven,
zal in 11 lezingen niet alleen de huidige stand van zaken geschetst worden,
maar de uitdagingen die toekomstige generaties een veilige en duurzame
leefwereld moeten verzekeren. Deze lezingenreeks richt zich tot alle
belangstellenden die meer wensen te weten komen over hoe onze planeet
functioneert, en over hoe de mens met zijn natuurlijke omgeving omgaat. |
